Everything You Know About Obesity Is Wrong

smandraws:

A few takeaways i got from this article:

1) diets to lose weight simply don’t work. if something has a %95 relapse rate then it might be time to stop using it as the standard bludgeon to attack fat people with.

2) skinny does not equal healthy, and fat doesn’t equal unhealthy

3) this quote:

According to a 2015 study, fat people who feel discriminated against have shorter life expectancies than fat people who don’t. “These findings suggest the possibility that the stigma associated with being overweight,” the study concluded, “is more harmful than actually being overweight.””

4) related to the above, we live in a society which thinks of being overweight as a moral failing and indicative of a lack of willpower. That’s bullshit. Also? Shaming people to lose weight doesn’t help them in any way.

5) activity level is a bigger indicator of unhealthiness than weight is. So if a fat person is having health problems, helping them have the confidence and energy to be more physically active (or whatever their goals are) will help them be healthy, even if they don’t actually lose any weight.

6) regardless of weight, eating less processed food will help you be healthier, but again we live in a society where healthy food is much much more expensive than the less healthy alternatives.

7) Why are there people who still think loudly and publicly that harassing fat people is going to do anything positive for anyone????? Do they honestly think that the fat person is unaware that theyre overweight and what society generally thinks about them??? Why in the world do people feel so compelled to share their distaste for someone else’s appearance?

8) related to the above, why are there people in the comments that brag about not reading the entire article and then loudly assert their own douchebaggery by bringing up points the article debunks. why did i read the comments.
